Smiling Beautiful Young WomanIf you’ve been considering rhinoplasty, you may be wondering if your smile will be affected long-term. The good news is that, in the hands of a board certified plastic surgeon who is experienced with nose surgery, you will still be able to grin with confidence post-procedure.

Here are specific ways in which the procedure or recovery might relate to your smile.

Swelling: Don’t worry, it’s only temporary.

After a rhinoplasty procedure, don’t be surprised if your smile is temporarily affected by post-operative swelling. The effect is temporary and your smile will return to normal after the initial swelling has dissipated. This may take anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks.

Do you have a dynamic tip? Here’s what else you need to know.

You may have what is called a “dynamic tip” if your nose tends to droop when you smile. If this is one of the things you’d like to change with a rhinoplasty, your plastic surgeon may recommend cutting the depressor septi muscle, located between the nose and muscles of the upper lip.

Many patients are concerned that releasing this muscle could permanently affect their smile, but the depressor septi is not part of the group of muscles that allow you to smile—an incision here will not permanently impede the movement of your upper lip. In the hands of an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon, your smile should be safe.

If you and your surgeon determine that it is necessary to release the depressor septi to create the results you want, the incision will be very small and the muscle will reconnect during the healing process. During this time, your upper lip may have decreased functionality and sensation, but will resume normal function within one to three weeks.

An experienced rhinoplasty surgeon will help keep you smiling

Whether you’re looking to have your nose minimized or reshaped, a number of rhinoplasty methods may be used to achieve your desired results. But the most important factor is your choice of surgeon. You’ll want a plastic surgeon who is not only experienced in rhinoplasty procedures, but also listens carefully to your goals and helps you understand all of the options. With realistic expectations and a trustworthy team in place, you’re likely to have results that put a smile on your face for years to come.
