Laugh it up, Atlanta! A recent study conducted by the University of Colorado-Boulder Humor Research Lab listed Atlanta as the third-funniest city in the US, falling just behind Chicago and Boston. They cited The Punchline Comedy Club as one of the top comedy venues in Atlanta—and who can blame them? As the hometown of such heavy-hitters as Tyler Perry, Jeff Foxworthy and Chris Tucker, Atlanta has some serious comedic credibility.
But did you know that living in a comedy hotspot has more benefits than mere entertainment? It’s true. Smiling and laughter release endorphins, which not only give us a sense of happiness and well-being, they also decrease the presence of the stress hormone Cortisol, which can help reduce feelings of anxiety. It’s even been suggested that laughter has similar effects to exercise, giving your abs a workout, elevating heart rate, and burning a few extra calories (but don’t trade your gym membership just yet, we’re talking about 50 calories or so for 15 minutes of hearty chuckles).
However, all this healthy laughter can emphasize unwelcome signs of aging around the face. Dynamic wrinkles such as crow’s feet form with repeated facial expressions, such as smiling, laughing, or squinting. And of course we have to mention smile lines, which form around the nose and mouth as a result of lost volume and skin elasticity and can look more severe when we smile.
Luckily, there are ways to look your best and still get those healthy belly laughs in, and we’ve got them right here at Advanced Aesthetics, as well as our Truffles Medispa. We’re talking about injectables, the superstars of wrinkle treatment. Fillers such as Juvederm and Sculptra are excellent options to soften smile lines and vertical lip lines, while Botox Cosmetic relaxes the muscles that form certain wrinkles like crow’s feet. Another reason to smile—injectables are minimally-invasive, don’t require any downtime, and depending on the treatment, you’ll see results within days.
If you’d like to see fewer wrinkles next time you smile, give us a call. While we love to laugh as much as anyone else we’ve met, we’re serious when it comes to helping our patients look their best.
