Abdominoplasty is performed by surgically removing the apron of skin under the belly button and tightening the underlying abdominal muscles. During the procedure, skin is lifted off of the muscle to enable a surgeon to tighten the area, which causes some trauma to the tissue. When this happens, your body increases blood flow to the area (which produces swelling) and fluid gathers between the skin and muscle.

As with any surgery, many patients will experience some level of discomfort. What do you think is the top complaint from patients during their abdominoplasty healing period?

A. The scar
B. The pain
C. The recovery period
D. The healing process

The answer is none of the above. The top complaint we hear from patients is about the dreaded drains.

After an abdominoplasty, drains are placed in the groin area and can be quite uncomfortable and annoying for patients—they must be emptied regularly, with the fluid then measured, recorded, and reported to your surgeon. Their purpose is to help get rid of excess fluid after your surgical procedure.

But we have good news—Dr. Feldman has been using a new drain-free abdominoplasty technique, and our patients are loving it! Incorporating progressive tension sutures, Dr. Feldman is able to create the same beautiful results without patients having to deal with the discomfort of wearing a drain after surgery.

To eliminate the need for post-abdominoplasty drains, there is one difference in the procedure: Dr. Feldman will pull down the skin flap and progressively stitch it back to the abdominal muscle wall before closing and suturing the external incision. This effectively closes off the space that is typically left between the skin and muscles after a tummy tuck, preventing fluid from having a place to gather, and reducing the risk of a seroma.

The best part about this new technique is: no drains! The procedure still provides patients with the same smooth, flat abdomen as with traditional suturing, but the need for drains is virtually eliminated.
