What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is part of a category of treatments known as non-invasive body sculpting or body contouring. The term “non-invasive” means non-surgical; these procedures are not surgeries. There are no incisions or sutures, no anesthesia and no recovery time required. CoolSculpting is one of the first non-surgical fat reduction methods developed and has quickly become one of the most popular due to its proven effectiveness and simplicity.
CoolSculpting uses a handheld tool that is placed over the area of fat you want to treat. The device targets your fat cells with a technology called cryolipolysis, or fat-freezing, in which your fat cells are cooled to a point where they sustain damage and cease to function. Your body then recognizes the frozen fat cells as a waste product and they are removed by natural waste disposal processes, thereby eliminating the treated fat.
This method was developed by researchers who observed that children experienced a loss of fat cells in their cheeks while eating frozen foods like popsicles. They noted that the cold mostly affected fat cells without causing permanent damage to other skin tissues, which led to further research to develop a tool that targeted fat cells alone. With this principle, the CoolSculpting tool can treat fat cells without damaging your skin or other surrounding structures, making it an exceptionally safe way to reduce stubborn fat.
Is CoolSculpting Right for Me?
CoolSculpting is a simple, low-risk treatment that is suitable for a wide variety of skin types and body types. Sessions are short — typically lasting only about an hour — so they can be a great option for those with busy schedules. Customizable attachments allow your provider to treat areas of fat of several sizes, from the lower belly to the chin. As the technology for CoolSculpting continues to improve, providers are increasingly able to adapt the tool to treat a wider variety of people. But just like any cosmetic treatment, CoolSculpting does have some limitations that we encourage our clients to learn about before choosing this option.
The most important distinction is that CoolSculpting is a fat reducing, body sculpting treatment rather than a weight loss treatment — it cannot help you shed pounds, but it will help you achieve smoother contours and a more toned physique. The ideal CoolSculpting client is someone who is at or near their “goal weight” — preferably someone who has adhered to a diet and exercise regimen but found visible areas of fat that are not responding to their efforts.
CoolSculpting Recovery and Results
Since CoolSculpting is non-invasive, you will be able to leave your appointment and resume all normal activities right away without worrying about jeopardizing your results. There is no need to take time away from work, school or other daily activities, and since no anesthesia is used during the treatment, you’ll be able to drive yourself home or elsewhere. Some clients experience soreness, bruising or swelling in the area for a week or so after their treatment, but this can be managed with over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or Tylenol or compression garments. These side effects do not mean that you are unable to participate in activities like exercising or day-to-day responsibilities.
CoolSculpting results can also take some time to develop since the procedure works with your body’s natural processes to reduce your fat. Most clients report noticeable results around three weeks after their treatment. These results will continue to develop over the course of about three months. For optimal results, you can choose to have multiple treatments in the same area, spaced about three weeks apart.
