Women are not the only ones with body concerns. If you are a man and are very self-conscious about taking your shirt off in public because your chest is large and maybe even droopy, you might have a condition called gynecomastia. Gynecomastia can affect men of all ages and may stem from a combination of environmental, health and genetic factors. You may have tried and failed to address this condition on your own and been left frustrated about the appearance of your chest. Rest assured, many men have had the same experience and you are not alone.

What is gynecomastia and when is surgery necessary?

Gynecomastia is a natural enlargement of male breast tissue that often has its origin in an individual’s hormone levels. In some men, estrogen levels may surpass testosterone levels, leading to the development of breast tissue. Male breasts may begin to resemble their female counterparts in size, shape and appearance. Needless to say, this occurrence can be a source of serious concern for men who feel their bodies no longer reflect their true masculinity. Most men will seek to have this condition treated in one form or another.

For those who are comfortable with surgery, male breast reduction can offer outstanding and permanent results that restore the masculine appearance of a patient’s breast tissue and provide permanent results for most men. Male breast reduction surgery is a well-understood and frequently performed surgery that can eliminate troubling symptoms, enhance the physique and maintain the principal characteristics which make a man individual, unique and handsome.

The Importance of Selecting a Qualified Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon for Your Consultation

The board-certified plastic surgeons at Advanced Aesthetics are experts in treating gynecomastia, or male breast enlargement, and improving the size, shape, position and overall appearance of the male breast tissue. Our experienced, Atlanta, board-certified plastic surgeons are knowledgeable about all of the surgical and non-surgical options available to you and they can help guide you through the many complex choices you face until you can find your ideal solution (whether that’s surgical or not) to address your concerns. After identifying the best option, your surgeon will craft a treatment plan that’s tailored specifically for you, and which includes instructions for surgery prep and aftercare, so you feel supported throughout the treatment process.

What will happen during my gynecomastia surgery?

Depending upon the shape of your breasts, our Plastic Surgeons — certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery — may recommend either liposuction, liposuction with the direct surgical removal of the breast tissue, or excision of the breast tissue and skin with a free nipple graft. If you are an adult and your breast mound is mostly fat in consistency with minimal excess skin, then your breast mound can be reduced with liposuction using small puncture sites. If you are an adolescent and the breast mound is dense fibroglandular breast tissue, then our plastic surgeons will recommend direct surgical removal of the central breast tissue and liposuction of the surrounding fat tissue. Or, if your breast mound is large and has droop, then we will recommend excision of the excess skin and breast tissue with free nipple graft that places the nipple back into a more natural anatomical position.

All of your surgical options will be explained to you in detail prior to your surgery, including the benefits and drawbacks of each technique, so you can make the most informed decision possible, minimize your risks and maximize your results. Your surgery will be performed in Fayetteville at our state-licensed, certified surgical center. Our patients are put under local anesthesia with an IV sedation or general anesthesia, which we feel maximizes both their safety and comfort. The reasons for your surgeon’s choice of anesthesia will be explained to you before surgery. Most male breast reduction surgeries can be completed within two hours, but your unique needs will determine the length of your surgery.

What is gynecomastia recovery like?

After surgery, most patients will spend an additional hour or so in our recovery room for observation before being discharged home. This allows your board-certified plastic surgeon to verify your safety and comfort post-procedure. Most patients experience very little discomfort after surgery. The surgical area will be well bandaged to provide the necessary protection and support to your healing incisions and these dressings will also help to minimize pain, making you more comfortable. Prescribed medications will also assure your comfort throughout recovery, though you may only need them for the first few days immediately after surgery.

Recovering at home can be both a fairly straightforward and comfortable process, especially if you prepare in advance. By ensuring your home has everything you will need during recovery ready and available, you can focus on resting and healing after surgery. You can also make it easier on any friends and loved ones who you will rely upon once at home. Most men can return to their regular, daily activities after one week; however, they should continue to refrain from certain activities, such as heavy lifting and contact sports, for up to six weeks after surgery. This will maximize protection of the surgical area and help promote your results.

Will a gynecomastia surgery alone give me the results I want?

Yes, most men who have excess breast tissue can find complete relief of their symptoms after having male breast reduction surgery. However, men who wish to see improvements in other areas of their body often pair a gynecomastia surgery with additional procedures, such as body contouring treatments, to have whole-body results. For example, liposuction and CoolSculpting can provide vital enhancements to the lower torso that complement the results of gynecomastia surgery very well. Some men may even benefit from an arm lift to maximize the after-surgery appearance of their upper body. Combining procedures also offers additional advantages. Men who combine surgeries enjoy a more enhanced look with fewer surgeries, recovery time and costs and they can also minimize their risks by having fewer procedures.

There is a common misconception that cosmetic procedures are largely for women, addressing concerns unique to their bodies and ideal looks. This notion is not entirely accurate. While women may still account for the majority of cosmetic surgeries performed today, countless men have needed and derived benefit from male plastic surgery and have sought procedures tailored especially for them. One such procedure is male breast reduction surgery. However, a wide variety of cosmetic procedures benefit both men and women and can be had quickly and discretely.

Men don’t have to avoid surgery because of the stigma that these surgeries have nor deny themselves the life-changing results any longer. Men deserve to feel comfortable and confident in their bodies just as women do; it is a human desire which everyone should enjoy. Most importantly, when you have your procedure performed by an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon, you can have a safe procedure with long-lasting results — one that enhances your masculine look and feelings and preserves your unique identity.

The board-certified plastic surgeons at Advanced Aesthetics are experts in male breast reduction surgery and can offer men outstanding results that can renew their satisfaction with their bodies and their lives. It is hard to appreciate the benefits of this surgery until you begin enjoying your results. Any reputable board-certified plastic surgeon should be able to show you ample before-and-after photos of prior patients to demonstrate the results they can achieve so you can fully understand its benefits. Ask your Advanced Aesthetics board-certified plastic surgeon for these during your consultation.
