Top 5 Reasons for a Breast Revision

3 Minute Read:

Luckily, just because you have gone for breast augmentation once doesn’t mean you have to stick to your initial choice. A breast revision looks to improve or reverse the results of a previous breast augmentation. This could be due to a variety of reasons ranging from aesthetic concerns to medical necessities.

No matter your reason, you can always go back for a breast revision to address issues or make changes. Breast revisions are quite common as breast implants are not expected to last forever.

While many women have healthy implants for 10 to 15 years, some women have healthy implants for much longer while others do not experience such success. Every woman is different, and there is no guarantee how long a woman’s implants will last.

We look at the top five reasons women undergo breast revision:

1. Desire to Change Implant Size

After some years pass, a woman may feel that her breast implants’ size no longer matches her. This could be due to a variety of reasons. She could have significantly gained or lost weight, making her implants seem disproportionate to her body. Or, a size that seemed appropriate when she was younger no longer works with her lifestyle changes (such as becoming a mom or getting older). A breast revision can increase or decrease the existing implant size.

2. Desire to Change Implant Type

When you initially undergo a breast augmentation procedure, you are usually informed of your different implant options. Both saline and silicone implants have their positives and drawbacks. After making an initial choice, you might change your mind. A breast revision procedure allows you to swap out your saline implants for silicone ones, or vice versa.

3. Desire to Remove Implants

After breast augmentation, some women decide that breast implants are not for them. The reasoning behind this can be for a variety of reasons, such as having children or a new aesthetic. Whatever the case, a breast revision can remove your implants and alter your breast and nipple back to their previous size and positioning.

Occasionally, a breast lift will be recommended when removing implants permanently to reverse any premature ptosis (breast sagging) caused by the implants.

4. Needing to Correct Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture is a breast implant complication that develops when internal scar tissue forms a tight or constricting capsule around the implant, contracting it until it becomes twisted and stiff. A breast revision procedure is necessary to reverse this and alleviate the scar tissue.

5. Needing to Correct Implant Rupture or Deflation

Implants are not indestructible. An implant can rupture or deflate, causing the breast to look strange. A breast revision will be necessary to fix a destroyed implant and replace it with a new one. If this happens, it’s important to act quickly to eliminate physical distortion or the possibility of loose silicone getting into the body.

While the cohesive gel used in modern silicone implants is less likely to escape from the breast pocket after a rupture, it is not impossible. We recommend that you undergo routine MRIs or ultrasounds every two years to verify the integrity of the implant.
